MEGAN BASHAM, HOST: Talk about getting wiped off the map!
Retailer Ikea made a public apology after a shopper noticed its map of the world at the D.C. store didn’t include New Zealand.
That’s right. Nothing but a sea of blue southeast of Australia, where nearly five million people live.
But Ikea isn’t the first offender in the cartographical realm.
The Smithsonian, the United Nations, Starbucks, and others have New Zealand-free world maps on display.
It’s such a common problem that New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern (Jah-sinda ah-DERN) took action. She launched a promotional campaign—called #getNZonthemap that features the prime minister, comedian Rhys Darby, director Peter Jackson, and singer Ed Sheeran creating hilarity over the gaffe.
As for IKEA, the company plans to phase out the maps.
It’s The World and Everything in It.
