MARY REICHARD, HOST: Police officers on patrol in Des Moines, Iowa, Monday received a 911 call about a reckless driver in a red sedan. Officers followed the car as it slowly zig-zagged down a four-lane road and then jumped a curb and stopped on a mound of grass.
Officers approached the vehicle. At the wheel? A 9-year-old girl with a 7-year-old riding shotgun.
Sgt. Paul Parizek told KCCI TV the children were just out for a joy ride.
PARIZEK: It’s obvious when we try to put away the dangerous things. We put away the guns, we lock those up. We try to keep the chemicals in the house and the cleaners all locked up. Obviously here, this could have been a lot worse than it turned out to be. So we need to be conscious of those things just around the home.
Thankfully, nobody was hurt. Parizek says they won’t be referred to juvenile authorities, adding … “the punishment to fit the crime is probably going to be in the home.”
