Kicker: Toilet Paper Gate

MARY REICHARD, HOST: Down in Alabama, the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office has a big problem on its hands: what local media are calling “Toilet Paper Gate.”  

The sheriff’s department mistakenly ordered 24,000 extra rolls of toilet paper at a cost of $22,000. And another $9,000 for nearly 500 cases of trash bags.

And the toilet paper is a specially stocked item for the vendor, which means the county can’t return most of it.

Their entire budget for janitorial supplies for next year is only $15,000. If you’re keeping track, they’ve now spent more than twice the budget on two line items.

County commissioners negotiated and managed to cut the bill in half. But there’s another problem: They don’t have any place to store an extra two years’ worth of toilet paper.

The newly elected sheriff, Phil Sims, says he’ll do his best to clean it up.
