MARY REICHARD, HOST: Minor League Baseball has some colorful team names. See what you think of these two:
The Akron RubberDucks. The Lehigh Valley IronPigs.
But I believe Madison, Alabama’s new Southern League baseball team has set a new standard. This one is in a league of its own.
The team ran a contest allowing fans to vote on the team’s new name.
Now keep in mind, Madison isn’t far from NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. So fans cast ballots for some, uh, unique space-related names. Moon Possums, Comet Jockeys and Space Chimps, to name a few.
But the runaway winner of the contest with 41 percent of the vote?
Drumroll, please: the Rocket City Trash Pandas.
“Trash Pandas” is a slang term for raccoons, made popular by Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies.
It’s The World and Everything in It.
