Kicker: Surfing with donuts

MEGAN BASHAM, HOST: A surfer dude from New Hampshire placed second in an international contest recently. But not for his surfing skills.

Korey Nolan’s homemade surfboard was what impressed the judges.

Most surfboards are made of polyurethane or polystyrene foam, which is coated with layers of fiberglass cloth and an epoxy resin.

But Nolan’s surfboard? Created out of Dunkin Donuts cups!

The contest rewards surfers for making surfboards out of repurposed materials.

Nolan told WMUR TV…

NOLAN: I collected a thousand, but I only needed 700 for the board, so I still have about half a surfboard in my basement.

Nolan wants to raise awareness about how those polystyrene cups affect the environment.

Top honors went to a surfer who built his board out of 150 aluminum cans.
