WORLD Radio - Kicker: Social media saves the day

MARY REICHARD, HOST: John Drennan and his fiancee Daniella were visiting Times Square when something terrible happened.

Daniella’s ring slipped off her finger and fell through a utility grate. They asked for help, but police couldn’t retrieve the ring. So they had to return home to England without it.

But New York’s finest did not give up the search.

Detective Joseph Bucchignano:

BUCCHIGNANO: There was a lot of muck and a lot of just typical stuff that you would find at the bottom of a sewer grate down there. But fortunately, it was actually just kind of sitting on top of all that stuff.

But there was another problem: They didn’t have the couple’s name. Didn’t have their contact information.

So social media had to save the day. And usually it spends its time ruining the day. NYPD put the word out and managed to identify the couple!

Detective Brian Glacken said that felt pretty good.

GLACKEN: We’re always looking to help in whatever we’re trying to do so—we deal with a lot of negativity, so it’s nice to deal with something that’s a little more positive.

Amen!

It’s The World and Everything in It.
