MARY REICHARD, HOST: A man from Ashland, Oregon, planned to purchase a new travel trailer with $23,000 in cash he got from the sale of his old one.
Cash he placed in a shoebox for safekeeping.
That was his first mistake.
His second was not telling his wife that the shoebox was stuffed with cash. And his third mistake was placing the box on a shelf of unwanted junk as his wife looked to declutter their home.
You can see where this is going.
By the time he noticed the box was missing, the recently filled recycling bin in front of their home was empty.
So he placed a frantic phone call to the recycling center. And hours later, sure enough, a worker at the plant spotted something unusual. This from KIEM News:
AUDIO: I was working on the line pulling off cardboard to be recycled when I suddenly saw some big stacks of $20 bills.
The money somehow stayed in the box during the 200-mile trip to the California facility. And the man recovered all but about 300 dollars of his cash.
