WORLD Radio - Kicker: Sandcastle scofflaws

MARY REICHARD, HOST: Just when you thought government had figured out a way to regulate every single thing, comes this story!

It’s from the Philippines, specifically, the resort island of Boracay.

So say you’re vacationing there and you think, “hey, let’s build a sandcastle. I think that’d be fun.”

Well, think again, bub. It’d be taxable, not merely fun.

You need a sandcastle license!

According to a new ordinance, beachgoers cannot create sandcastles without first forking over a fee to the local government for the privilege.

And they are not kidding around here. The police will knock over unlicensed sandcastles.

They say it disrupts the natural habitat.

Right.

In fact,  it’s aimed mainly at local artists who collect tips from tourists to make custom sandcastles.

It’s The World and Everything in It.
