Kicker: Politics and patients

MARY REICHARD, HOST: Dr. Lotay Tshering is a skilled doctor and surgeon. He’s the best known physician in Bhutan, his home country in south Asia.  

But these days, healing and curing people is more hobby than career. That’s because his new day job is prime minister.

Tshering was voted into that office last fall.

But he decided to keep his medical practice going on the weekends and devotes a morning a week to advise doctors in training. This, Tshering says, allows him to de-stress!  

He sees crossover between his roles as surgeon and as prime minister. At the hospital, he scans patients and treats their ailments. In the government, he scans policies and tries to improve those.

As the doctor/head-of-state put it: “Some people play golf, some do archery, and I like to operate.”
