WORLD Radio - Kicker: Pigeon racing

MARY REICHARD, HOST: Pigeon racing may not be your sport of choice. But in China, it’s popular. It’s not hard to understand why- the grand prize is $160,000!

A pair of Chinese competitors tried to cheat their way to the prize in last year’s Shanghai Pigeon Grand Prix. They put their birds in milk cartons and hopped onto a high-speed train to shave time off the 405-mile race.

Once the men realized authorities were on to them, they tried to cover up the crime. They didn’t get away with it, though.

In August, they had to hand over the prize money. It was either that or serve a three-year sentence for fraud.

It’s The World and Everything in It.
