Kicker: Personalized fan gear

MARY REICHARD, HOST: The University of Tennessee’s website crashed last week. And a young boy 500 miles away from the school was indirectly responsible. 

It all started at Altamonte Elementary School near Orlando, Florida. It was College Colors Day at the school when kids could wear the jerseys of their favorite teams.

The student in question is a huge University of Tennessee fan—but didn’t have any UT fan gear.

So he wore an orange shirt, drew the letters “UT” on a piece of paper and pinned it to his shirt. 

He was proud, yet when some classmates made fun of him for it, he was crushed. 

When the University of Tennessee caught wind of his story, the school responded in a big way. They sent the boy plenty of fan gear, but that’s not all! 

They were so inspired by his school spirit that they made an official t-shirt with the boy’s hand-drawn design. 

As his story spread online, so many people tried to buy the shirt that it crashed the university’s website! 

The school said part of the proceeds from sales of the t-shirt will go to an anti-bullying charity.
