Kicker: No volcano s’mores

MARY REICHARD, HOST: The U.S. Geological Survey Twitter account has been busy. For weeks, it’s been posting updates and warnings about Hawaii’s Mount Kilauea volcanic eruption.

Despite that, some tourists have found the lava flow irresistible. One Twitter follower asked, “Is it safe to roast marshmallows over volcanic vents? Assuming you had a long enough stick, that is?”

The geologists at USGS responded “… no, that’s not safe, please don’t try!

They added that if the vent emits sulphur dioxide or hydrogen sulphide, the marshmallows would taste bad.

Best to save your s’mores for the campfire.
