MARY REICHARD, HOST: Ninety-year old Hershel McGriff, senior, made history two weeks ago at Tucson Speedway in Arizona. He became the oldest person ever to compete in a NASCAR race.
He tells the television station KGUN that age doesn’t matter on the track—
MCGRIFF: When I get my helmet on, nobody knows how old I am and they might say, ‘Well, who’s that guy that just went by me?’
McGriff began his career in 1945, and last raced in 2012.
He passed a stress test before the Tucson race— which he also kicked off by playing the national anthem on his trombone before the crowd.
He says he was more nervous about that.
