Kicker: Mutilated money

MARY RECHARD, HOST: If you’ve ever been the parent of a toddler, you probably have experience with those plastic caps to keep little fingers out of electrical outlets.

But a Utah couple recently discovered the need for a different kind of precaution. Something to protect cash from paper shredders.

Ben and Jackee Belnap are die hard University of Utah football fans, and they’ve been saving cash for season tickets.

Then one day they noticed the envelope where they’d been keeping the cash had gone missing.

Turns out their 2-year-old son had recently been helping mom shred the junk mail. Only he was a little too zealous. He grabbed the envelope with the cash, and seconds later, one thousand dollars was shredded to ribbons.

Ben Belnap is keeping his cool. He’s turning to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, which can help in a situation like this. The bureau does work to verify and replace mutilated money.
