WORLD Radio - Kicker: Memorial rock

MARY REICHARD, HOST: Sometimes you just have to get creative.

That’s what a road crew in Colorado had to do when massive boulders slid off a mountain onto the highway.

Crews blasted the smaller of the two rocks to repair the road. That one was a mere two-and-a-half million pounds.

But the other one weighed eight-and-a-half million pounds, about the size of a house. It destroyed a patch of Highway 145.

Here’s where creativity kicked in. Rather than remove the big rock, crews moved the road instead.  They’re rebuilding around it.

Good news, too: it’ll save taxpayers about $200,000 by not blasting it up into pieces.

Not only that, it’ll make money: the rock that fell on Memorial Day weekend has been named “Memorial Rock.”

The governor said it will be the state’s newest tourist attraction.

It’s The World and Everything in It.
