MARY REICHARD, HOST: The town of Rabbit Hash, Kentucky, is mourning the loss of its first female mayor. Residents say they’re sad but they knew she was getting up in years.
She was 12.
Mayor Lucy Lou was a border collie. And believe it or not, she was the town’s third canine mayor.
Rabbit Hash is a town of about 300 people on the banks of the Ohio River, too small to need an actual mayor. Here’s how one good citizen of Rabbit Hash explained to WDRB television.
AUDIO: It started in the late 1990’s as a fundraiser. We charge you a dollar for your vote, and we allow you to vote as often as you want.
Lucy Lou served from 2008 to 2016. Then she stepped down, that prompted another election, and that helped raise funds to rebuild the historic general store ravaged by fire.
We could use a little more of that honest devotion in Washington!
