WORLD Radio - Kicker: Home for the holidays

The beloved Home Alone house gets a 1990s makeover

MARY REICHARD, HOST: Hard to believe that the movie Home Alone debuted 35 years ago. It turned a quiet house in suburban Chicago into a tourist attraction.

John Abendshein owned the place during filming and lived there the whole time:

ABENDSHEIN: After the shoots the cast and crew just hung around because they were away from home themselves. And the home became kind of a second home to them. So they became what I describe as our movie family.

Abendshein sold it in 2012 and those owners sold it again early this year. And guess what? The new owners are restoring the home to how it looked back in 1990.

A sort of longing behind that, as in the movie:

KEVIN: Can I see my mother? I’ll never want another thing as long as I live. I just want to see my mother.

At the end of the day, there’s just no place like home.

It’s The World and Everything in It.
