WORLD Radio - Kicker: Hit by a deer

MARY REICHARD, HOST: A woman running a half-marathon in New Jersey this week had to receive emergency medical attention. No, it was not due to exhaustion. It was due to a collision. Christina Sanchez told the Asbury Park Press she was feeling good around the 10-mile mark of the Jersey Shore Half Marathon.

SANCHEZ: Next thing you know, I just see kind of brown blur come by me, and I went flying to the side. It was a buck cuz I saw the antlers, and he was just trying to jump over me.

REICHARD: But he didn’t quite make it.  The collision knocked her to the pavement and she lay there stunned. EMTs checked her out. And after realizing nothing was broken, she decided to carry on.

SANCHEZ: You know, I always tell my kids if you’re knocked down, just pick yourself back up and keep going. So I did, and they were waiting for me at the end, so I needed to finish.

REICHARD: And she did indeed finish!

But Sanchez said from now on, she’ll heed those deer crossing signs.

It’s The World and Everything in It.
