WORLD Radio - Kicker: From slaughterhouse to sanctuary

MARY REICHARD, HOST: Police dispatchers probably hear everything.

But for one dispatcher in New Jersey, this was something else altogether.

DISPATCHER: Can you head over to Route 80 East by the Exit 67 toward downtown Patterson? We got a caller say he’s got an injured cow in the middle of the road.

A cow on the way to the slaughterhouse leapt out of the second floor of the transport trailer.

The agitated bovine led police on an hour-long chase along Interstate 80. Eventually she was subdued and delivered to Skylands Animal Sanctuary, where she will live out her days.

The cow was treated for minor wounds and a few days later, gave birth to a healthy calf!

We’re also happy to report that the officers, who were never taught how to wrangle cows on an interstate highway, are also safe and sound.

It’s The World and Everything in It.
