MARY REICHARD, HOST: A man in Western Australia discovered he’s breaking the law by living on his own land.
Last summer, officials in Menzies, Australia began to fine Roland Gopel $50 a day for living in a camper.
The city ordered the 58-year old retiree to install a septic tank and connect to city water.
He says he can’t afford that and doesn’t want the improvements.
What if he is forced off his land?
GOPEL: Well, I’ll be destitute. Homeless and destitute. I’m not moving. Where else is there for me to move to?
The law isn’t on Gopel’s side— but some local supporters are. Two thousand of them signed a petition demanding city officials back off.
