WORLD Radio - Kicker: Deep water dog

MARY REICHARD, HOST: When you work on an offshore oil rig, you expect to see marine life. Dolphins, whales.

What you don’t expect is what oil workers off the coast of Thailand saw:

AUDIO: [Boat sound, people talking]

An exhausted, dog-paddling pup. One-hundred-thirty miles from land. One of the men posted video.

There he was! A little red pup in the waves. As he got closer, the workers saw his desperate, sad eyes. They simply knew they had to help him.

Workers came up with a way to pull him onto the rig. And it worked!

Nobody knows how the little guy wound up in the middle of the Gulf of Thailand. Perhaps he jumped or fell off a boat. No matter. His rescuers named him Boonrod. Which means “survivor.”

It’s The World and Everything in It.
