Kicker: Cleaning up the Jersey Shore

MARY REICHARD, HOST: Thousands of volunteers got to work cleaning up New Jersey’s shoreline over the weekend in an annual beach cleanup. 

Tory Woods with Clean Ocean Action says the cleanup not only beautifies the beaches, but accomplishes much more: 

WOODS: Every time that a piece of debris or plastic or trash is removed from the beaches, it’s one less piece that’s in the ocean that could be potentially harming marine life.

In March a whale found dead off the coast of Spain was found to have 37 pounds of plastic in its stomach. So these volunteers on the other side of the ocean did their part: they hauled off tons of trash,  plastic soda bottles, tires, fire extinguishers, even 55-gallon drums.
