WORLD Radio - Kicker: Baby in office

MARY REICHARD, HOST: An Illinois Democrat made history this week. Freshman Senator Tammy Duckworth on Monday became the first U.S. senator to give birth while in office.

Duckworth was an Army helicopter pilot in the Iraq War. In 2004, she lost both legs when a rocket-propelled-grenade struck the Blackhawk she was co-piloting.

She decided politics was a way to keep serving the country.

DUCKWORTH: We all have to figure out a way to face the obstacles in our lives. What works for me is just to take it in small steps but just don’t quit, just to keep trying.

Now the 50-year old Duckworth has the challenge of a new baby girl— Maille Pearl.

Both mom and daughter are doing fine.

It’s The World and Everything in It.
