Kicker: A young candidate for governor

MARY REICHARD, HOST: What did you do over your summer vacation when you were 14 years old?

Chances are, you weren’t quite as ambitious as Ethan Sonneborn. This summer, he ran for governor of Vermont!

He learned his state had no age requirement, and decided to pursue the Democratic nomination.

He toured town squares. He shook hands. He planted yard signs. He even took part in a primary forum with other gubernatorial candidates.

SONNEBORN: I recognized that there was a new movement of leadership that can be doing better. I think that my campaign transcends age.

On Election Day, he captured eight percent of the overall vote and did a little better in his home county where he earned 16 percent.

Fourth place—but that’s not too shabby for a candidate who can’t legally drive yet.
