MARY REICHARD, HOST: A local government in Germany is getting a global tongue lashing after it went to extraordinary lengths to collect a tax debt.
The family failed to pay its taxes, and so authorities began looking for anything of value that would cover the debt. I mean, anything.
The best they could do was take the family’s pedigree pug, which officials promptly sold on ebay and were able to fetch—sorry!— fetch about $850.
The town defended its decision this week, noting that the move was a last resort.
But here’s a twist to this sad —here we go again!—tale: The dog’s new owner has spent more $2,000 dollars in vet bills after being assured the dog was healthy when she bought her.
The buyer is now suing the town to recoup those vet costs.
