MARY REICHARD, HOST: Sometimes it all comes down to a coin-toss.
That’s how a woman in the Philippines won the mayor’s seat in the town of Araceli.
Sue Cadilla worked tirelessly for months to unseat incumbent Mayor Noel Beronio.
The townspeople did their duty and went to the polls. But when the ballots were tallied, both Cadilla and Beronio had won exactly 3,495 votes. Each.
The candidates agreed to the classic tie-breaker where the coin toss comes in: Cudilla chose tails. And with that she won the best-of-three coin flip tiebreaker.
You know, I think there’s something really appropriate about that, choosing tails to win. You know, tails, not heads, if you are going to be a servant of the people.
