WORLD Radio - Kicker: A floating car

MARY REICHARD, HOST: When Blackstone, Massachusetts Fire Chief Michael Sweeney got the call on his radio, he feared the worst.

He raced toward the Blackstone River, where a car was, for the moment, still floating. It had plunged down a 50-foot bank and landed in the river.

SWEENEY: All I could keep thinking of was how many people are in that vehicle, who’s in that vehicle and am I gonna be able to get them out of there.

Two occupants: a woman and her cat.

She’d just picked up her pet from the groomer on Saturday when she crashed into the river. Sweeney said she managed to grab the carrier, and climb out the window before the car sank. A good Samaritan then helped her swim to shore.

Sweeney told WCVB tv…

SWEENEY: She’s a spunky lady. I’ll tell you, to be able to do what she did and get out of that car, she was amazing.

The driver and her cat both escaped without serious injury. Good news!

It’s The World and Everything in It.
