Trump on immigration and border » President Trump was in West Virginia on Thursday for a roundtable discussion on tax reform but much of the president’s focus in remarks yesterday was on the need for immigration reform.

TRUMP: If you have a baby on our land, congratulations. That baby is now a United States citizen. We’re the only one. Now Mexico has very tough policies. They can do whatever they want, which is the way it should be, to be honest.

The president also said a border wall is coming, adding, “we’ve already started building it.”

Earlier this week, the Trump administration announced it would deploy National Guard troops to the southern border.

Speaking on Air Force One after departing West Virginia, he told reporters 2-4,000 Guard troops will head to the border. But just hours earlier, the Pentagon said it had no estimate as to how many troops would head south. Spokesperson Dana White said they’ll need more details from Homeland Security and governors in border states.

WHITE: From that, we’ll determine how many and what’s the mission and how many we’ll deploy.

The president says the National Guard will remain on the border until a wall is built.

Daughter of poisoned spy recovering, Russia calls for probe » The daughter of a former Russian spy is recovering in a British hospital a month after a nerve agent attack in the UK. Yulia Skripal has been hospitalized ever since she and her father, Sergei Skripal, were attacked on park bench in Salisbury with what British officials called a “military grade” nerve agent.

In a statement Thursday, Yulia Skripal said “I woke up over a week ago now and am glad to say my strength is growing daily.”

66-year-old Sergei Skripal reportedly remains in critical but stable condition.

Britain and other world leaders blame Russia for the attack, but Moscow still insists it had nothing to do with it and is blasting the British government for shutting them out of the investigation.

YAKOVENK: Maybe somebody will help us to convince them to investigate jointly.

Russian Ambassador to the UK Alexander Yakovenk told reporters Thursday:

YAKOVENK: For us it’s very clear that these people were poisoned and they’re Russian citizens, and the criminal case is open in Russia, so we want to know the truth.

The nerve agent attack sparked a diplomatic crisis. The Russian delegation to the UN has called for a public session of the Security Council to answer accusations made against their government by the UK ambassador and by U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley.

F-16 crash update » The U.S. Air Force is confirming that the pilot of an F-16 that crashed Wednesday in Nevada died in that crash. The military is withholding the name of the pilot pending notification of the next of kin.

The pilot was a member of the Thunderbirds air demonstration squadron, which performs at air shows around the world. An Air Force spokesman said the jet went down during a routine aerial demonstration training flight. The Pentagon has opened an investigation into the cause of the accident.

Surgeon General makes new opioid recommendations » The U.S. Surgeon General has issued the first national public health advisory from his office in 13 years. WORLD Radio’s Sarah Schweinsberg has more.

SARAH SCHWEINSBERG, REPORTER: In another sign of just how bad the opioid epidemic has become … The nation’s top doctor is calling for more Americans to start carrying the overdose antidote naloxone.

Speaking at a drug abuse summit in Atlanta on Thursday, Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams said “You don’t have to be a policeman or a firefighter or a paramedic to save a life.” He noted that more than half of all opioid overdose deaths occur at home. And Adams said he hopes those who are at risk — as well as their friends and family members — will keep the antidote on hand.

More than 42,000Americans died of opioid overdoses in 2016, more than double the number who died in 2010.

Naloxone can restore a person’s breathing after it’s injected or sprayed in the nostrils, quickly bringing overdose victims back from near-death.

YouTube shooter latest » Investigators in California are combing through often bizarre videos posted online by the woman who opened fire at YouTube’s headquarters in San Bruno Wednesday. In social media posts, Nasim Aghdam railed against YouTube for “suppressing” her content to limit its views.

BARBERINI: At this point in the investigation it is believed that the suspect was upset with policies and practices of YouTube. This appears to be the motive for this incident.

Aghdam’s family told police she “hated” the company. Her father told reporters that he called police to report his daughter missing after she didn’t return his calls for two days, adding that he warned police that she might go to YouTube.

The 39-year-old shot and wounded 3 people before killing herself. The victims remain hospitalized — one in critical condition, another serious condition.
