Cal Thomas: The Kavanaugh investigation

CAL THOMAS, COMMENTATOR: Who believes a seventh FBI investigation of Brett Kavanaugh will be the end of it?

The bureau is currently looking for information that could support Christine Blasey Ford’s accusation that Kavanaugh assaulted her at a party in 1982. That claim is missing key details—namely the date and place of the alleged attack.

The FBI investigation is reportedly limited to Ford’s charge and that of another woman, Deborah Ramirez, who says Kavanaugh exposed himself at a party when the two were students at Yale. The New York Times has already investigated that claim—interviewing dozens of potential witnesses—and couldn’t find a single witness to corroborate her story.

That problem is not limited to Ramirez. Ford named Kavanaugh friend Mark Judge as being present. But he has denied it with the threat of a felony conviction for lying.

Another “witness,” Leland Keyser, also denies she was at the described party. Ford’s response was that Keyser has “medical issues,” implying her word cannot be trusted.

This is not a Monica Lewinsky case where there was forensic evidence from a blue dress stained with Bill Clinton’s DNA. This is about attempting to prove behavior that Ford is 100 percent sure occurred, and that Kavanaugh is 100 percent sure didn’t occur.

Where does that leave us? With due process. In this country we believe a person is innocent until proven guilty. The Ford story is nowhere near that standard.

Over the weekend The Washington Post obtained a five-page memo from Rachel Mitchell—the sex crimes prosecutor Republicans brought in to question Ford. In it she lists nine major inconsistencies in Ford’s account. I encourage you to go online and read it.

But here’s the bottom line: In Mitchell’s professional opinion—quote—“A ‘he said, she said’ case is incredibly difficult to prove. But this case is even weaker than that… Dr. Ford identified other witnesses to the event, and those witnesses either refuted her allegations or failed to corroborate them.”

Even if the FBI comes to the same conclusion, don’t expect this political assassination attempt to end. Because this was never about the evidence. It was about delay tactics to get through the November election.

Democrats and liberal activists will stop at nothing to keep another constitutional conservative off the court. As Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told CBS in early July:

SCHUMER: I will oppose him with everything I’ve got.

It seems that includes bearing false witness against a good man.
