Cal Thomas: Political focus

MARY REICHARD, HOST: And I’m Mary Reichard. Commentator Cal Thomas now on where the political focus is—and where it ought to be. 

CAL THOMAS, COMMENTATOR: Objectivity is kind of like Elvis. It long ago left the building in Washington. And so many are interpreting the Mueller report through biased eyes.

Democrats had counted on Mueller to prove that the Trump campaign colluded with Russia. So they were initially as crestfallen as they were on election night 2016. Still, they are undeterred in the pursuit of their ultimate goal: evicting the president from the White House in a political coup.

The Mueller investigation gave us more than two years of investigations, subpoenas, witness testimony, and wasted taxpayer dollars. And the result is worth quoting from Mueller’s final report: “The investigation did not establish that members of the Trump Campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities.”

As for obstruction of justice, how does one obstruct something that is not a crime?

It’s not surprising Democrats are not satisfied. Some are even accusing Attorney General William Barr of a cover-up. Others want to immediately begin impeachment proceedings. But for which high crime and misdemeanor? Bad presidential behavior is not an impeachable offense. American voters will decide on that question.

More experienced Democrats, such as Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, are rightly cautious. They remember the electoral damage to Republicans when the GOP impeached Bill Clinton in 1998. It will be interesting to see which wing of the party prevails in the current struggle.

The Wall Street Journal’s Kimberly Strassel had it right in her column. She wrote—quoting now—“President Trump has every right to feel liberated. What the [Mueller] report shows is that he endured a special counsel probe that was relentlessly, at times, farcically obsessed with taking him out.”

Add this “witch hunt” to the long list of reasons many Americans hate Washington. None of this political show affects average citizens. Here’s what does affect them: a booming economy, job growth, the lowest unemployment in half a century, and fewer people receiving food assistance.

The left doesn’t want Americans to focus on the administration’s successes, because they are incapable of doing better. They can only repeat their familiar scenario of higher taxes, bigger and more controlling government, and “free stuff” for all.

President Trump should not let them get away with changing the subject. The economy is vibrant success story, and the president should use his bully pulpit to tout it.
