WORLD Radio - Cal Thomas: Abortion in New York

MARY REICHARD, HOST: Today is Tuesday, February 5th. Good morning! This is The World and Everything in It from listener-supported WORLD Radio. I’m Mary Reichard.

NICK EICHER, HOST: And I’m Nick Eicher. Next up, Cal Thomas on our culture’s modern form of child sacrifice.

CAL THOMAS, COMMENTATOR: New York’s Reproductive Health Act, which authorizes late-term abortions and removes any criminal penalties related to the practice, caused an uproar last month. But it should come as no surprise.

These and similar efforts in other states are the rotten fruit of a culture that has long abandoned the sanctity of life endowed by our Creator. We are our own gods now. And in declaring our own sovereignty, we justify practices once considered unthinkable.

So-called bioethicists have argued publicly for what they describe as “after-birth abortion.” Another argues for the right of parents to leave their newborn babies to die, ostensibly to protect their quote—“genetic privacy.” Such practices used to be called infanticide.

Sound extreme? Abortion on demand once sounded extreme, too.

What has been legislated in New York and attempted in Virginia, may be coming soon to a state near you. These laws can be considered nothing less than an updated form of child sacrifice. Some ancient cultures offered their children on altars of fire or killed them and presented them to so-called “gods” in hopes of receiving some twisted blessing. Instead, their uncivilized civilizations collapsed from moral rot.

The Bible specifically condemns child sacrifice in Leviticus and Deuteronomy. Psalm 106 describes human sacrifices as the barbaric customs of idol worshippers.

Modern idols—personal peace, convenience, pleasure—call for more “sophisticated” worship. Our sacrifices today are justified on the basis of who is inconvenient, imperfect, or even the wrong sex. Did we think we could get away with this and not suffer national, cultural, and spiritual consequences? A booming economy does not supplant a bankrupt morality.

Abominable is defined as “a vile, shameful, or detestable action.” But what happens when a culture removes the standard for such a definition? Who then decides what is abominable?

We’ve abandoned the slippery slope, and now find ourselves wallowing in an ocean of blood. That would please Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood and a eugenicist. She once wrote that the term “birth control” summed up her whole philosophy. And by that she meant, quote—“the release and cultivation of the better elements in our society, and the gradual suppression, elimination, and eventual extinction, of defective stocks—those human weeds which threaten the blooming of the finest flowers of American civilization.”

One day, America’s story will be written in the past tense. Future historians will surely determine our once great nation’s collapse started with our indifference to God and all of the horrors that historically and inevitably follow it.

For WORLD Radio, I’m Cal Thomas.
