After Mackenna Greene took an abortion pill in December 2023, she panicked. She didn’t want to abort her baby, but fear about her health, her finances, and her housing overwhelmed her. She already had one baby and couldn’t imagine life with another newborn. She felt like she had nowhere to turn.
She frantically began researching whether the effects of the abortion pill she’d taken could be undone. She came across the Abortion Pill Rescue Network, which connected her to a nurse-midwife. The nurse immediately dropped her weekend plans to examine Mackenna and her unborn baby in the office after hours. The nurse prescribed progesterone for Mackenna, a proven method of reversing the abortion pill in some cases. Because of this network and the loving care of a Christian nurse, Mackenna now has a healthy baby girl.
The pro-life movement is often accused of not caring for women. But the truth is the pro-life movement and the many Christians within it have created a number of wrap-around support services for women in need.
Oftentimes, it can be difficult to know how to help a pregnant woman or young mother in need, like Mackenna. Here are a list of services and hotlines to help you know where to turn when faced with an opportunity to help.
For Pregnancy
When a woman finds out she is pregnant, her first need is often someone to talk to. Unfortunately, the abortion industry pushes abortion as the one-size-fits-all solution. But there are life-affirming, non-judgmental phone lines available that can be a safe place for a woman to talk through her situation.
Option Line is a 24/7 hotline with the ability to refer a woman to her closest local pregnancy center. Sometimes they can even make an appointment for her. She can also learn about housing options in her area, or request to speak to a nurse on Option Line Plus.
Pregnancy Decision Line uses phone coaches to provide options for counseling right from the phone or chat. This virtual support can especially help when women are unable or unwilling to visit a pregnancy center.
When a woman has multiple complex needs during her pregnancy or afterwards, Loveline connects abortion-minded women and struggling moms to case management that includes access to local resources, direct financial assistance, and mental health counseling, as well as direct material support and ongoing care coordination.
American Pregnancy Association has a hotline that allows women to ask their questions about pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding and receive educational information in addition to general pregnancy support.
If a woman is being pressured by her doctor to abort her baby due to some form of fetal abnormality via a positive screening or diagnostic test, the PrenatalDiagnosis.org hotline helps women receive life-affirming support to continue her pregnancy, and even be connected to a virtual parent care coordinator for free service coordination.
The National Catholic Bioethics Hotline can answer difficult questions about how to handle pregnancy complications or emergencies in ways that honor and help both mom and baby.
For Adoption
If a pregnant mom doesn’t want an abortion but doesn’t feel ready to take care of her baby long-term, there are hotlines for women interested in adoption or safe surrender options.
Lifeline Children’s Services has a national hotline that can advise women on adoption options, with absolutely no obligation to place their child for adoption. Lifeline supports the woman whether she chooses to place her child for adoption or raise her child herself. Even if the child has a disability, many expectant moms don’t realize there are families willing to adopt special needs children.
If a mom doesn’t want to go through the adoption process, she has the right to safely surrender her child at any hospital in the nation plus many other locations. The National Safe Haven Hotline can give her information on the state-specific Safe Haven laws.
The Safe Haven Baby Box Hotline can educate a pregnant woman on the states that have baby boxes, and where babies can be safely and legally surrendered anonymously with no interaction with personnel.
For Abortion
Even if a woman has begun or had an abortion, like Mackenna, the pro-life movement is willing to meet her mercifully. Special helplines can comfort and advise her with mercy. The Abortion Pill Reversal hotline helps women locate a local doctor willing to write prescriptions for progesterone that can help reverse an abortion pill.
Abortion Survivors Network helps adult survivors of abortion, but many people don’t know they also serve moms whose children survived a stopped, reversed, or failed abortion. Families can receive help and parenting or adoption support.
H3helpline is a 24/7 hotline that can connect women to local healing programs and can help women even if they are still in the middle of their at-home abortion drug protocol.
Support After Abortion is an online healing program in abortion recovery that is palatable for a secular audience. They also offer a unique curriculum called Unraveled Roots, which treats women with abuse and other core issues from abortion trauma. They can also help connect to ongoing local support.
So much help and hope exist for women with unexpected pregnancies or abortion regret. These resources, plus countless local pregnancy resource centers, are but a small sampling of the many good organizations seeking to support women in one of the most vulnerable and emotional times of their lives.
Mackenna Greene wants other women to have the opportunity to meet their babies. Now you’re armed to help them do so.
