In recent weeks, the gender insanity of progressive politics has resurfaced again, this time in the form of a 2019 American Civil Liberties Union questionnaire filled out by then-Sen. Kamala Harris. In it, Harris backed several alarming policies—including decriminalizing federal drug possession—but none more alarming than her declaration that prisoners should have access to taxpayer-funded gender transition surgeries.

In the questionnaire, Harris wrote, “I support policies ensuring that federal prisoners and detainees are able to obtain medically necessary care for gender transition, including surgical care, while incarcerated or detained.” Further, she checked the “Yes” box when asked whether she would use her executive authority as president to ensure that transgender inmates receive transgender surgeries.

The ACLU questionnaire was not an isolated incident. In an interview Harris did with the National Center for Transgender Equality Action Fund while she was a candidate for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, she bragged, “When I was attorney general, I learned that the California Department of Corrections … [was] standing in the way of surgery for prisoners. … And there was a specific case. When I learned about the case, I worked behind the scenes to not only make sure that that transgender woman got the services she was deserving … I made sure that they changed the policy in the state of California so that every transgender inmate in the prison system would have access to the medical care that they desire and need.”

So, there it is. Vice President Kamala Harris, the leader of today’s Democratic Party and its nominee for president, has made her stance abundantly clear: She views mutilative transgender surgeries as a fundamental human right that applies to those behind bars and should be funded by taxpayers. As a Christian leader and a concerned citizen, I find this position deeply troubling for many reasons.

Transgenderism fundamentally contradicts the historic scientific consensus that a person is biologically classified as male or female based on their DNA. For decades, science has recognized that humans are male or female according to their chromosomal makeup—males having XY chromosomes and females having XX chromosomes. These genetic markers are immutable, determining not only physical characteristics but also biological functions such as reproduction. Transgender ideology, which asserts that gender can be changed through identity or medical intervention, rejects this well-established understanding of human biology by promoting the idea that gender is a subjective experience rather than a biological reality grounded in DNA.

Kamala Harris’ support for taxpayer-funded gender transition surgeries for inmates is not just an isolated political position—it represents a dangerous convergence of bad science, medical malpractice, fiscal irresponsibility, and identity politics gone awry.

For many Americans, particularly those of us who hold to a Biblical worldview, the idea of gender transition is fundamentally at odds with the belief that God created humans as male and female (Genesis 1:27). One’s sex is not something that can be altered surgically or chemically; it is a God-given identity that defines who we are as individuals. By endorsing what the ACLU calls necessary surgical care—and what Harris has herself characterized as necessary, taxpayer-funded gender transition surgeries—she not only undermines the Biblical understanding of human identity but also forces Christians and others with similar beliefs to violate their consciences by paying for procedures that contradict their deeply held moral convictions.

In a country already burdened by a national debt exceeding $33 trillion, the idea of further straining taxpayers by funding elective surgeries for incarcerated individuals is both irresponsible and unjustifiable. The average cost of a gender transition surgery can range anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000, depending on the specific procedures involved. When you factor in the necessary lifelong hormone treatments, post-surgery care, and mental health counseling, the financial burden on the taxpayer becomes immense. With thousands of inmates already struggling to access basic healthcare services like cancer screenings, dental care, and mental health support, it’s clear that taxpayer resources should be directed to essential healthcare needs rather than elective surgeries. The focus of prison reform should be on rehabilitation, mental health support, and ensuring public safety, not on providing expensive, elective medical procedures.

It is disheartening that Vice President Harris supports taxpayer-funded surgeries for convicted criminals who may have committed heinous crimes against innocent citizens. Public safety must remain the primary focus of our prison system, and taxpayer dollars should not be diverted toward elective medical procedures for those who have violated the law.

Kamala Harris’ support for taxpayer-funded gender transition surgeries for inmates is not just an isolated political position—it represents a dangerous convergence of bad science, medical malpractice, fiscal irresponsibility, and identity politics gone awry. Her stance disregards the immutable realities of biology, undermines the integrity of the medical profession, and imposes an unjust financial burden on taxpayers already stretched thin. Even more fundamentally, it undermines the purpose of the prison system and puts identity politics above public safety. Therefore, not only as Christians who recognize that this violates creation norms but as responsible citizens, we must reject the radical ideology that promotes gender transition surgeries as a fundamental right. This we must do for the good of the church and our nation.
