Pope Francis, the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, died of a stroke on April 21 at age 88 after a dozen years of leadership. Formerly known as Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Francis was the first pope to be a member of the Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuit Order, and was the first pope from the Americas, hailing from Argentina.

World leaders, refugees, and cardinals alike mourned Pope Francis at his Saturday funeral Mass. Before the mass, uniformed pallbearers carried Francis’ simple wooden coffin from St. Peter’s Basilica, where his body had lain in state, to the square outside.

The late pontiff was buried outside Vatican City in the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major, also known as the Santa Maria Maggiore. Francis is the eighth pope buried at the Santa Maria Maggiore, a stark contrast to the 90 papal graves at St. Peter’s Basilica. He requested a simple tomb with no ornamentation beyond the inscription “Franciscus.”
