The multiday severe weather outbreak began to unfold Friday and lasted through the weekend, pounding communities with thunderstorms that packed hurricane-force wind gusts, torrential rain, and lightning that knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of utility customers. Additionally, the storm system unleashed tornadoes, stirred up dust storms, fueled wildfires, and brought flooding across the Midwest and Southeast. The states of Missouri, Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama, and North Carolina all reported deaths from tornadoes or severe storms. Damage assessments and recovery operations are now underway.
