Every year since 2006 WORLD reporters have traveled the United States (and in the past three years, foreign countries as well) to research and write about Christian poverty-fighting programs that offer challenging, personal, and spiritual help.
This summer we published profiles of four Christian ministries in the running for the 2014 Hope Awards for Effective Compassion. East winner Seeds of Hope in urban New Jersey ministers to prisoners, prostitutes, addicts, and others. Midwest winner Friends Ministry has 61 rural Michigan acres in which the poor can work off their bills. South winner Maury United Ministries gives rides in Tennessee to those without transportation, and in the process builds relationships. West winner Jubilee Leadership Academy works with troubled teenage boys in Washington state.
Jubilee Leadership Academy of Prescott, Wash., is the winner of WORLD’s 2014 Hope Awards for Effective Compassion. More than 12,000 readers and ministry supporters voted in a record turnout. At the Nov. 20 awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., Jubilee executive director Rick Griffin (pictured at right with his wife, Leann/photo by Willis Bretz) accepted the award and a check for $25,000.
The four regional winners and the international winner, Compassion International’s Central American programs, received checks for $4,000. Runners-up in each region received $1,000.
