NICK EICHER, HOST: It’s Monday morning, excited to get back to work on a new week for The World and Everything in It.

Today is the 9th of July, 2018.

Good morning, I’m Nick Eicher.

MARY REICHARD, HOST: And I’m Mary Reichard.

Before we get going today, we want to tell you about a new opportunity to get involved with the program.

We’d like to invite you and listeners like you to introduce each day’s program.

We’ve got a term for that, and we call it the “preroll.”

For example, you’ll hear one of our staff say, “The World and Everything in It is made possible by listeners like you. I’m so-and-so, and I do such-and-such here at WORLD. I hope you enjoy today’s program.”

EICHER: Well, we’d like for you to do that. And here’s how. I’ll give iPhone instructions, because that’s what I know best. (If you have an Android, try this set of instructions.)

But you take your iPhone and say, “Hey, Siri! Open Voice Memos.”

Press the red button. That’s the record button.

Then you’ll see the digital counter start running. Hold the phone at about eye level, as though you’re looking at a picture.

Then say: “The World and Everything in It is made possible by listeners like us. My name is Nick Eicher. I live in St. Louis, Missouri, and I work at WORLD. I hope you enjoy today’s program.”

Then you press that red button again and that’ll stop the recording. Press “done” and you’ll see a dialogue box that allows you to name the file.

It says New Recording 1, so I’ll just go with that. Then press “save.”

You’ll see the recording there. Go ahead and press play and verify it works.

… and it does.

Then press that box with the up arrow, that’s for sharing the file. Select the “mail” icon and email it to us at editor@wng.org. Press SEND, and that’s it.

REICHARD: Well, one more thing. We want it to sound the best it can, and here’s a little trick. If you’ve got a walk-in clothes closet, go in there. All your winter stuff should be hanging up in there, so that’s good. But it’s probably the least echo-y space in your house. Record in there. Another tip, and Nick does this all the time because he does a lot of traveling: You can record in your car. No echoes in there, either. Just make sure the air conditioner isn’t on and the engine isn’t running. But a car doubles as a great recording space. So you can record there, too.

EICHER: This is going to be great.

So remember the three elements:

First — The World and Everything in It is made possible by listeners like us.

Second — introduce yourself, where you live, and your vocation.

And third — I hope you enjoy today’s program.

After we get a bunch of them, we’ll start using them at the start of the program. Lots of you really enjoyed hearing the various staff we have at WORLD and we just thought, let’s expand that and ask listeners to participate with us. You all have done so much to help make this program what it is today, and we’re all in this together, so let’s add more voices to it – yours.
