Trump, Democrats respond to Russia hacking rumors
Accusations and denials are flying in Washington today over reports that hackers with the backing of the Russian government worked to get Donald Trump elected. The Washington Post reported Friday, citing anonymous sources, that the CIA believes support for Donald Trump motivated Russian government operatives to pass hacked emails from the Democratic National Committee to WikiLeaks in the final days of the campaign. President Barack Obama has ordered the intelligence community to investigate, and incoming Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., is calling for a congressional inquiry. Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, has insisted the emails did not come from the Russian government. And the Post report acknowledged the CIA still has not established a direct link between the Kremlin and the individuals who handled the emails. The Trump transition team dismissed the CIA’s alleged findings Friday night in a statement: “These are the same people that said Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. The election ended a long time ago in one of the biggest Electoral College victories in history.”
