Six more people charged in Flint water crisis
The Michigan attorney general charged six more people today with misconduct and other crimes for neglecting to protect the public from lead-tainted drinking water in the city of Flint. Public health problems, including lead poisoning in children, have plagued the town as a result of the contamination. The new charges bring to nine the number of current and former public officials facing prosecution. Employees of the departments of Health and Human Services and Environmental Quality face accusations of tampering with evidence, tampering with test results, misconduct in office, and willful neglect of duty. In June, Attorney General Bill Schuette filed a lawsuit against two water-engineering companies, saying their negligence caused and exacerbated the water problems and demanding what could total hundreds of millions of dollars in damages.
