Protesters clash with police in Baton Rouge
Police arrested nearly 200 protesters in Baton Rouge, La., over the weekend as demonstrators around the country expressed their anger at recent police shootings of African-American men. Alton Sterling died early last Tuesday from gunshot wounds after a confrontation with Baton Rouge police officers. His death began a week of violence that saw the officer-involved shooting death of Philando Castile in St. Paul, Minn., and a deadly attack on police officers in Dallas. Among those arrested in Baton Rouge was a 28-year-old New York woman whose image has quickly become an icon of the protest movement. A freelance photographer captured a picture of Ieshia Evans, clad in a long sundress, standing calmly in the street as police in riot gear approached her. A friend of Evans’ told the Daily Mail that the woman went to Baton Rouge to join protests because she “wanted a better future for her 5-year-old son.”
