ISIS using tens of thousands of Iraqis as human shields
Islamic State (ISIS) is kidnapping civilians from surrounding villages and using tens of thousands of them as human shields to ward off the offensive on Mosul, according to the UN human rights office. The UN said it has received reports of more than 200 people being killed for refusing to comply with orders or being former members of the Iraqi security forces. Iraq and a U.S.-led coalition of allies began a large-scale operation Oct. 17 to retake Mosul, the last urban area under ISIS control in Iraq. The U.S. military said it tried to disrupt the forced displacement of civilians south of Mosul earlier this week by striking militant vehicles being used in the operation.
