Iran sentences American to 10 years in prison
An Iranian court has sentenced an American man and his father to 10-year prison terms after convicting them of “cooperating with the hostile American government.” The Mizan news agency, which made the announcement, did not specify what Siamak and Baquer Namazi had done. Government officials detained the men last year. Baquer Namazi was a former governor of Iran’s oil-rich Khuzestan province under the U.S.-backed shah. The family fled Iran after the 1979 Islamic Revolution. But Siamak Namazi, who has dual U.S. and Iranian citizenship, maintained business ties with his former homeland, traveling back several times and calling for improved relations between the two countries. His efforts earned him the ire of hardliners in Tehran, who accused him of leading a Western effort to infiltrate Iran.
