Cuban exiles celebrate Castro’s death in the streets of Miami
Thousands of people poured into the streets in Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood early today to celebrate the death of Cuba’s former President Fidel Castro. “Fidel, tirano, llévate a tu hermano,” or, “Fidel, tyrant, take your brother!” demonstrators shouted in reference to current President Raúl Castro, according to the Miami Herald. Miami is home to a large enclave of exiles from Cuba’s 1959 revolution who have shaped local culture and politics for several generations now. Miami’s Cuban-born mayor, Tomás Regalado, told the Herald the city would do its best to accommodate the revelry around the city. “I think what’s happening right now is a sign of solidarity with the people of Cuba,” he said. In contrast to Miami, where Cuban-Americans popped champagne and marched in the streets, the streets of Havana, Cuba’s capital, remained calm and quiet after the news of Castro’s death.
