Colombians kill FARC peace deal
Colombians on Sunday narrowly defeated a peace referendum that would have ended decades of civil war with the leftist rebel FARC group. Although polls predicted those who favored the deal outnumbered opponents 2-to-1, the referendum failed by a razor-thin margin, with 49.8 percent in favor and 50.2 percent opposed. Government officials signed the peace deal with the rebels last week. It’s not clear how either side will move forward, but analysts don’t expect fighting to break out again. For now, the cease-fire with the FARC’s 7,000 guerrilla fighters remains in place. But the referendum indicates deep divides in Colombian society, where wounds from the FARC’s long-running war have been slow to heal.
