California proposes bill to protect abortionists

California lawmakers proposed a law Friday to protect doctors who mail abortion drugs to other states. The bill would also stop California from extraditing a doctor facing abortion-related charges in another state. It would also shield suspected violators from paying fines and allow them to sue anyone who tried to keep them from providing abortions. The bill would not protect a California abortionist who performs an abortion in another state.

Do other states have laws like this? Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, Maryland, and Vermont have passed or proposed similar bills protecting abortionists. Some pro-life groups say the group of laws violates Article 4, Section 1 of the Constitution, which says states must give “full faith and credit” to each other’s laws. Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon also signed the first state law specifically outlawing chemical abortions on Friday. Chemical abortions are already restricted in 15 other states that protect babies in nearly all cases. Wyoming is the first state to have legislation to protect babies from chemical abortions in a separate law.
