What a contrast to Daniel in the government of the Medes and Persians. His opponents hated him and wanted him out of the way. They searched high and low and found no just cause for discrediting him. They had to trick the king into blindly creating a trap for Daniel.
Today, we have leaders with pasts so full of questionable, unwise, immoral and illegal conduct that they can take turns prosecuting one another under the existing laws of the land. Character does matter and the patterns set by this generation of leaders is putting our nation on a very bad trajectory.
In the 1970s, Gerald Ford essentially sacrificed his political future by pardoning Richard Nixon. The action stopped what would have been more years of legal and political battles consuming the efforts of our nation.
Oh for a leader today that would recognize that "all who take the sword will perish by the sword." (Matthew 26:52b ESV)
