The worst part of these settlements is that the murderers are usually given immunity and are allowed to keep their blood money, so I guess this is a (small) step in the right direction.

Yah, they probably pushed their drugs like every other drug company on the face of the planet. I know Doctors were giving my mother Oxycodone like candy. However, all the States want is money. They see deep pockets and say goody. Both the Feds and states went nuts in their opioid mania so people with legitimate pain are left with chronic uncontrolled, debilitating pain so some Federal or State idiot can say they did something about the Opioid crisis. Pathetic.

It does remind me of the tobacco settlements, where in that case much of the states' largess didn't go to preventing /addressing nicotine addiction but rather to other "priorities" (such as closing budget deficits and funding entitlement programs).

I'm sorry, but you are extraordinarily misinformed. I urge you to do some research into the Sacklers. What they did is not even remotely SOP, and the lawsuits came from a genuine desire for justice. They are also responsible for the suffering of people with legitimate pain. "All the states want is money" is a frighteningly cynical take that's not even remotely supported by reality.
