30 years ago I was raising 4 kids and found that I was well below the poverty level. I took no government aid. This expansion of SNAP is terrible and needs the work requirements. And they need to make sure the food is real food not just sugar drinks etc.

My Two Cents

How is Justin Seward able to earn a degree from UP, and a graduate degree from Harvard if he is eligible for SNAP? I guess my "world view" is you feed yourself and house yourself and pay bills before you attend a high priced university. But, take out a copious amount of loans, get yourself $300,000 in debt, all the while collecting SNAP? Sounds like a cool scam.

Work requirements for any type of federal aid are immoral.

You're idea is a lot of the problem.

Mr. Roy, the debt is not the problem here. The question is the priorities for the spending. I will quote Acts 2:45 again "They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need."
Even if you limit the context to our brothers and sisters in Christ, if the government does not help those in need, then we had better look in the mirror and spend more out of our own pockets. Otherwise, we are being hypocritical.
It is like the arguments of cutting medicaid and other health aid. There is a cost in primary care of prescriptions, office visits, and tests, but if those people don't have enough care, they cost a lot more in emergency room visits and hospital stays. The balance is key in prevention cost vs. consequences.
We can cut back on defense spending in the budget, we can tax the rich more (despite Trump's fear?! of the consequences), we can by all means cancel the military parade, Trump can donate all of the money he earns from his bitcoin (its own ethical dilemma in itself), it is priorities. There is always room for fraud, waste, abuse, etc., but as with most things this year, it shouldn't serve as an excuse to use the chain saw when you really should be using a scalpel.

The recently graduated student in this article, Justin Seward, could (from my experience) easily find work during the summer instead of being concerned about losing SNAP benefits even while taking classes and writing a book. Many have gone to classes and worked to provide for themselves.

He says he is in a work-study program. From the people I know in those programs, they alternate between working for a stretch and studying for a stretch of time. Without knowing what he is doing for work or studying/classes/research, I will reserve judgement on what he is capable or not capable of doing.

I wasn't judging. One can study and work at the same time

The federal government should be responsible for the protection of the United States. The body of believers (church) should be the ones feeding the poor, as Jesus states all through His ministering.
