Self government is a precious gift from God. Christians should steward well that gift and not despise it.

Ps 146 says it best.
Do not put your trust in princes,
in human beings, who cannot save.
4 When their spirit departs, they return to the ground;
on that very day their plans come to nothing.

"A sick society must think much about politics, as a sick man must think much about his digestion; to ignore the subject may be fatal cowardice for the one as for the other. But if either come to regard it as the natural food of the mind—if either forgets that we think of such things only in order to be able to think of something else—then what was undertaken for the sake of health has become itself a new and deadly disease." -- C.S. Lewis
I was reminded of Lewis' quote when reading this article. Sometimes I think politics has so corrupted and consumed the evangelical church that we need to abandon it completely, Anabaptist style. But it cannot be ignored, and indeed God has placed us in this world to be a light in the darkness and point the world to him. I suppose political influence is a lot like money: something that is ubiquitous, incredibly tempting, and can be used for good or evil. So instead of eschewing it our only hope is to seek the Lord earnestly as we use the resources he's given us to love our neighbors and make Him known to a lost and dying world.
